The Argentine paradox

The Argentine Paradox

We can all agree: the Argentine team is detestable. Truly detestable. But at the same time, it must be acknowledged, quite admirable. During this World Cup, this team demonstrated on four occasions (Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, and England) its refusal to give up (a quality too often underestimated). From the anthem onward, you can feel their commitment and being carried by something greater, something immutable; football suddenly becomes mystical. After three years in MLS, we thought Messi was finished, practically retired. We were afraid that this one competition too many would tarnish his exit and therefore his legacy. But he demonstrated that even at 39, he remains the best player in the world and outclassed Kane and Bellingham in a semi-final that he concluded with panache. He now only has one match left to cement his status as the greatest player in the history of football.
