What are we to make of this decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF)?
Morocco should have been declared the winner the moment Senegal’s players refused to return back to the pitch, but the referee didn’t do so, and the match eventually resumed after 14 minutes, delivering an epic conclusion. Coming back two months later to overturn the sporting result is both incomprehensible and laughable.
If we follow this logic, we might just as well imagine cancelling Argentina’s 1986 World Cup title, on the grounds that Maradona had deliberately handled the ball in the quarter-final against England without the referee noticing. Yet no one ever challenged that result at the administrative level, despite the injustice.
Through its slowness, CAF has rendered its own decision illegitimate. The Senegalese victory has been consumed and fully digested — the champagne drunk, the celebrations done — there is nothing left to take back, except a symbolic trophy weighted down with shame. CAF corrects one injustice with another, sows division across the continent, and tarnishes, once more, the image of African football.

Mais l’arbitre ne l’ayant pas fait, et le match ayant finalement repris après 14 minutes pour nous offrir un dénouement épique, revenir deux mois plus tard sur le résultat sportif est incompréhensible et risible.
Si l’on suit cette logique, on pourrait tout aussi bien imaginer l’annulation du titre mondial de l’Argentine en 1986, au motif que Maradona avait volontairement marqué de la main en quart de finale contre l’Angleterre et que l’arbitre ne l’avait pas vu. Pourtant, personne n’a jamais remis en cause le résultat sur tapis vert, malgré l’injustice.
Par sa lenteur, la Confédération africaine de football (CAF) a rendu sa décision illégitime car le football est avant tout une émotion. La victoire sénégalaise est consommée et même digérée – le champagne a été bu, les acteurs célébrés –, il n’y a plus rien à reprendre à part un trophée symbolique lesté d’une honte. La CAF corrige une injustice par une autre injustice et fait naître la division sur le continent et ternit, un peu plus encore, l’image du football africain.
